Confusion about travels from West to East
Hamburg (dpa) - Sunday saw some confusion about possible
new ways of travel by Western citizens into the GDR. While
the official GDR news agency, ADN, reported that the existing
rules had not been changed, many people reported that they
traveled into the GDR without any visa. Western border
security at Braunschweig confirmed that many travelers had
reported that displaying your ID card or passport sufficed.
ADN quoted the GDR ministry of the interior, saying these
reports had no foundation at all. Western border security
at Braunschweig said that the old rules were still in effect.
The Western foreign minister, Hans-Dietrich Genscher, called
upon the GDR to allow free travel from West to East as well.
