Inverness is the "capital" of the Highlands, even though
the immediate surroundings are rather flat. The city has only 60,000 inhabitants, but
its catchment area for services like large supermarkets (Tesco is open 365 days a
year, 24 hours), hospitals or airports comprises several thousand square kilometres.
Rail and bus links connect Inverness to Edinburgh and Glasgow, while flights
are available to London, Shetland, and the Outer Hebrides.
